Nickerson Nebraska June 23, 1998      This storm produced multiple tornadoes across Nebraska that evening beginning to the west of Columbus at around 5:00 P.M. The storms got a good jump on us that evening because I was in the midst of repairing my chase vehicle, which happens to be my only one. It is a little hard to chase without any front seats! Anyway, they first produced a large tornado in Columbus and began to work their way to the east northeast. By the time that we caught up with it, north of Nickerson, it had begun producing numerous funnels on the horizon. Unfortunately we were also fighting nightfall at the time and were attempting to get to a high vantage point, due to the fact that the countryside sits low in a valley. For the sake of getting any good footage at all, we decided to remain at a safe distance. Had we decided to get any closer, it would have been too dark to discern any rotation at all, let alone a tornado.
